LEARN THE SECRETS OF KILTS AND SCOTTISH TEXTILES
WITH A KILTMAKER
Tartans and kilts are iconic symbols of Scottish heritage, rich in history and culture. However, gaining an in-depth understanding of these elements can be challenging as weaving mills are not always accessible to the public, and kilt makers often work from home, remaining unseen.
This means visitors are left to admire the tartans and kilts in shops without fully comprehending the artistry involved in their creation.
Join us for a private talk and workshop
about kilts, tartans and tweeds
Our private talk and workshop with an expert kiltmaker will take you on a journey through the rich history of Highland dress and tartan in Scotland. From the Feileadh-mor (great kilt) depicted in Outlander to contemporary tailored kilts, we’ll explore the evolution of these iconic symbols of Scottish heritage.
You’ll also learn about the different types of tartans and cloth woven in Scotland, from the larger tartan mills to independent Harris Tweed weavers. We’ll delve into the history, culture, and artistry behind these textiles, providing you with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Scotland’s heritage.
Making a bespoke, high quality kilt takes a great amount of time, preciseness and meticulous planning and sewing. Unfortunately, for these reasons, many high street shops and online businesses opt for cheaper and quicker machine-made kilts, compromising the quality and durability of the final garment. Our expert will talk you through the challenges faced by kiltmakers, including the addition of Kiltmaking to the Red List of Endangered crafts in 2021. We’ll share our commitment to preserving this precious craft and what we’re doing to achieve this as independent artisans.
Finally, your kiltmaker will guide you through the intricate process of crafting a high-quality handmade kilt, sewn by hand from start to finish. You’ll learn about the main steps involved in kilt making, including the crucial and complicated process of tartan pleating. With the opportunity to try pleating a tartan yourself, you’ll discover the endless possibilities and creativity offered by just one tartan!
You will also leave our workshop with a small tartan gift to remind you of your time us!
